Thought i’d post up a quick review of the EZ Quick bike carrier for roof bars.
It’s a minimal upside down carrier that holds the saddle and bars. It’s also my first roof carrier so got nowt to directly compare it with, although have had my bike on the roof of a couple of mates cars with conventional right way up carriers.
Ordered via ebay, cost about £38 delivered (from Israel). Took about 7 days and was well packaged in a nice box. Box included destructions and all fixings (including allen key for the bolts).
Bolting on the the roof bars was simple and took about 5 mins (M4 bolts with nylock nuts that sit in slotted recesses). The sections that sit under the roof bars have a flat side for square bars and an shallow v-shaped side for aero bars.
Fairly minimal when left on the roof, so can probably be left on when the bike isn’t on with minimal effect on the mpg.
Saddle is held on a plate bolted to the roof bars with a strap and quick buckle. On the first test run I did find that this had loosened slightly so added a toe strap on the return an this seemed to keep them both tight.
Bars are held with a u-shaped aluminium fixing with serrated teeth that slides through holes in the roof bar bracket and a ‘tooth’ locks in to them. I also added a toe strap to this set up as a back up (I tweak a lot when my bike is anywhere other than in the boot!).
Pros:
Very quick to put the bike on the car and take it offUpside down nature of the carrier means bike is very stable at the front end (as the bars are clamped)Small circular thingy that pulls the tooth out and releases the handle bar hoop can be unscrewed so you can’t take the bike off the carrier/roof (I wouldn’t rely on this to keep my bike safe, but as a quick deterant popping in to the services etc should help)
Cons:Saddle strap came lose on first run (secured on return run with another strap)Teeth on handle bar hoop fairly coarse (to keep them strong and make sure the tooth engages well) meaning on some grips/bars adjustment may not be fine enough to tighten onto bars securelyUnknown durability (it isn’t a Thule)Bars are very secure (i.e. can’t wobble bike side to side at all at bars), but back end wobbles about as much as a normal carrier (which is something I don’t like), so need to try out some things to make the back end more secure.
